UK’s first South East Asian Arts Festival

Want to meet celebrity chef and Vietnamese food ambassador Luke Nguyen? Or learn the secret technique of rolling those immensely popular Banh Mi 11 spring rolls? How do you tell the difference between Thai and Italian basil? Where can you eat chilli crab in London? Unravel and taste these delicious mysteries of the east at the Southeast Asia ArtsFeast, curated by Edible Experiences, in partnership with SEA ArtsFest, the UK’s first South East Asian Arts Festival which runs this month (October) and next.

The ArtsFeast kicks off this weekend (Sat 5 Oct) at 5FootWay, a Southeast Asia street food market in the heart of Bankside. Thirsty visitors can sign up for an Asian wine flight by ever-quirky wine tasting popup company A Grape Night In and see which wines go best with their Asian street snacks.  They can also meet Van Tran and Anh Vu of Banh Mi 11 fame, who will be demonstrating recipes from their new cookbook The Vietnamese Market Cookbook.

Southeast Asian feasts popup like shitake mushrooms in every corner of London on 19 Oct. Table for 10 Vietnamese supperclub serves up spicy bun bo hue in Whitechapel; Pepe’s Kitchen BBQs chicken and deep fries quail eggs Filipino style in Marylebone while Kusina di Lola serves up a fiery Bicol Express at Tooting Market. Seafood fans should book in quick for Wild Serai Malaysian supperclub in New Malden for her legendary chilli crab and Nyonya (Straits Chinese) fish head curry.

Fans of Luke Nguyen can meet the celebrity chef in person on 24 Oct — he’s demonstrating recipes from his new book The Food of Vietnam in Covent Garden at School of Wok, who will be running Malaysian, Thai and Vietnamese cooking classes as well as leading Chinatown market tours throughout the festival.

5 FOOT WAY presents a South East Asian Street Food Market

In conjunction with SEA Arts Fest 2013 and Bangkok Kitchen at 229-231 Union Street, London SE1 0LR from 12:00 – 18:00 on 5 October 2013

5 Foot Way was founded by Malaysian Michelle Lee, and long-time friend and business partner, Singaporean Hi Ching to promote and champion East Asian and South East Asian food in the UK. Both have lived in London for over twenty years and through their work strive to develop understanding and awareness for East Asian culture and arts, and build community projects.

Feeding Michelle’s lifelong passion for the food of the region, she has selected SE Asian street stalls and supper club chefs with a reputation for cooking up delicious, high quality food cooked from the heart.

Visitors will be able to sample some of the best South East Asian Street food in London at this unique pop-up market in the heart of Bankside showcasing the diversity of the region’s cuisine which includes vendors from Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines and Burma. Special events such as wine tastings with Asian foods and Asian wines and summer roll making demo cum cooking class are also planned.
