British Chinese in Profile – Kwong Ngan awarded the British Empire Medal

Kwong Ngan BEM BCAc was recognised in The Queen’s Birthday Honours list on the occasion of Her Majesty’s official 90th birthday and was awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) for sustained outstanding voluntary service to the Liverpool Chinese community and wider community.

The presentation ceremony took place recently in October 2016 in the heart of Liverpool city centre at the Athenaeum, a unique and distinguished setting and with the Lord-Lieutenant of Merseyside Dame Lorna Muirhead DBE representing the Queen.

Other dignitaries present included Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Merseyside David McDonnell Esq CBE DL, the Clerk to the Lieutenancy Lieutenant Sean McEvoy BEM, the Lord Mayor of Liverpool Councillor Roz Gladden and Consort Councillor Roy Gladden, the Mayor of Wirral Councillor Pat Hackett and Mayoress Elaine Hackett and the Mayor of Sefton Councillor Iain Brodie-Brown.

After the presentation afternoon tea was served and the Lord-Lieutenant met family and friends of the four Medal Recipients.

The ribbon of the British Empire Medal is rose-pink with pearl-grey edges, awarded for meritorious service and carries the motto For God And The Empire. Recipients of this award are also invited to attend the Royal Garden Party.

It has been a memorable 12 months for Mr Ngan who was accredited with 2 other awards, the national BCAc British Citizen Award and Liverpool Citizen of Honour Award.

Mr Ngan has been chairman of the the See Yep Association (UK) for over 20 years, last month they had a double celebration as this group of volunteers recently won the Queens Award For Voluntary service, the group equivalent of an MBE and also celebrated their 110th birthday!
