This October the China National Peking Opera Company returns to Sadler’s Wells with it’s rich and unique art form. Performing fresh interpretations of the classic Peking Operas A River All Red and The Phoenix Returns Home. 

This is the first time these particular operas will be performed in Europe by the China National Peking Opera Company, and is an exciting opportunity to be immersed in the intriguing art of Peking Opera and take a cultural adventure into Chinese traditional artistic heritage from a world-class company.

The two performances showcase the broad range of talent of the company’s talented and highly experienced leads, Yu Kuizhi and Li Shengsu. While the magnificent costumes and artful combination of dance, mime, music and acrobatics provide a source of wonder for audiences of all ages.

A River All Red tells the story of one of China’s most celebrated generals, Yue Fei, who remained loyal to his commanders in the face of bitter betrayal. Combining song, dance, and awe-inspiring acrobatic performances the opera tells the highly polished story of Yue Fei’s life and struggles. It is a true feast for the senses and is the opening performance of Sinolink’s productions this season.

In contrast, The Phoenix Returns Home is a romantic farce first performed in 1929 and is one of the most popular works performed by the Chinese National Peking Opera Company. Mistaken identity ensures the path of true love never runs smoothly in this delightful and hilarious comedy.

The art of Peking Opera requires a lifelong dedication in order to achieve the high levels of performance skills. Most of the artists train from a very tender age at opera school before becoming an apprentice and learning from the masters of this incredible art form. It takes a very special dedication and passion to endure the intensive training to become a professional artist and not everyone is guaranteed success.
