Hangzhou: Opportunities for UK Businesses

Hangzhou is around 160 kilometres south of China’s commercial capital, Shanghai, and has a population of over seven million.

It’s the capital and political, economic and cultural centre of Zhejiang province. Its excellent logistical facilities, open government and low costs have promoted strong economic growth over the last 15 years: it has the third largest economy in the Yangtze River Delta area. An ancient and attractive city, Hangzhou not only has an excellent business environment but also a good quality of life. For the fourth time, it has been named the ‘Happiest City’ in China by a national magazine.

This video is part of a series on China’s regional cities. Each video shows the size and scale of the city, its overall attractiveness as a place to live and work, and introduces potential business opportunities.

UK business interest in China has been focused on a few large established cities on or near the coast. However, these markets are maturing, competition is intensifying and costs are increasing. As a consequence companies are considering alternative locations for business expansion and development.

Regional cities are fast becoming the target for local and foreign investment. The rapid rate of urbanisation, expansion and economic growth of these cities offers considerable opportunities across a wide range of industrial sectors and business activities.
