Prior to Chinese New Year, it’s customary to make time to put all your affairs in order, clean your house and replace old with new. This is mirrored by the European custom of Spring cleaning and setting resolutions for the new year. Take this seasonal opportunity to learn how we can create positive physical spaces for ourselves using two related philosophies – feng shui and using spatial energy and intention to support personal growth. China Exchange’s short form debate evening returns to welcome the Year of the Rooster. Guest speakers have just 8 minutes to convey their position and start the conversation with the audience. From Hinkley Point to whitewashing in the entertainment industry, you can expect a provocative evening designed to challenge your assumptions and make you think. Speakers include Dr Kerry Brown, director of the Lau China Institute at King’s College, London Dr Victor Fan senior lecturer at the Department of Film Studies, King’s College London and film consultant of Chinese Visual Festival and Dr Vivienne Lo, director of China Centre for Health and Humanity.

丝竹报春 – Silk and Bamboo: Music for the Arrival of Spring

A special Spring Festival concert featuring two renowned musicians, Dr Cheng Yu and Liu Menglin on China’s silk 丝 and bamboo 竹 instruments. Silk and Bamboo, “sizhu” describes string and wind instruments in China; strings were traditionally made from silk and flutes and other wind instruments from bamboo. The programme for this special sizhu evening at China Exchange will evoke the arrival of Spring and showcase a variety of classical Chinese instruments.
