Internship with Dongfeng Race Team – Isle of Wight

OC SPORT OVERVIEW

OC Sport is a global sports marketing company specialising in professional sailing and outdoor events ranging from running, cycling and biathlon, to more extreme sports including adventure and trail running races. OC Sport is a leading event management business and rights holder, it manages competitive teams and athletes on and off the water and provides consultancy to brands, host venues and other events.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Dongfeng Race Team are a sailing team from China backed by Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle Company and managed by OC Sport. The Dongfeng Race Team are participating in the 12th edition of the world’s leading crewed offshore round the world race (Volvo Ocean Race), that starts on 11 October 2014 from Alicante, Spain and will end in July 2015 in Gothenburg, Sweden.

JOB DESCRIPTION

You will support all aspects of media and communication activity for the Dongfeng Race Team. This position holds a fair degree of responsibility and you will be expected to carry out the work requested efficiently, reporting to your Line Manager and as required act proactively. Your time will be shared between race training locations and event sites. The role includes, but not limited to, the following tasks:

• Content creation e.g. press releases, online content for the team’s website, plus occasional Chinese Media support
• Support on media reporting including logging of all media coverage for the team
• Processing mail-outs and distribution of all content e.g.. press releases, video advisories, hard copy mailings, plus management of all mail-out lists
• Uploading and management of content to various platforms; website, CMS, Digital Media Exchange etc
• Support content management e.g. photographs/video content
• Assist the team with media trip logistics including travel, and accommodation

PERSON SPECIFICATION

• Must have a valid visa to work in the UK/EU for a minimum of 12-18 months
• A real passion for a career in communications evidenced in previous experience and interests – a desire to learn, develop a greater understanding of communications and PR
• Excellent English language skills (verbal/written)
• Excellent communicator, both written and verbal, and confident in liaising effectively with both internal and external parties
• Good creative writing skills with the desire to develop those skills working alongside the current media team
• A working knowledge of Microsoft office packages, particularly Excel, and understanding the necessity to undertake database work and content processing
• Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail
• Self-motivated personality, able to take on more responsibility with the ability to work to tight deadlines
• Ability to work under own initiative, take instruction and work within a small team
• Willing to try new things
• Determined and resourceful and able to work under pressure
• A good working knowledge/interest in social media is beneficial
• Sailing knowledge would be beneficial but not essential
• Additional advantage would be video/photo editing skills as a large part of this role would be managing the team’s digital content

TERMS

• Available to start as soon as possible until July 2015
• Contribution paid towards your personal expenses each month
• 20 working days holiday per annum, this holiday entitlement would be pro-rata depending on your start/finish date
• Free accommodation (inc. bills & WiFi) in the “crew house” in Cowes. You may have to share a twin room (with a person of the same gender) during the busy summer months. The other interns also share this house, so it’s quite fun!
• Travel & accommodation are covered if attending events; expenses are paid in accordance with current policies
• Travel costs for one return travel from your home to Cowes with prior approval
• Office hours are generally 9am – 5.30pm, but you may be required to work extra hours including evenings and weekends during our extensive busy event periods
