Designer in Profile: Pal Pang, Chief Creative Officer at Another Design International

Upon graduation at the University of the Creative Arts in the UK, Pal Pang received an honorary bachelors degree in interior design and returned to Hong Kong. He started out in a retail and commercial branch of interior design, such as shopping malls and residential development.

Aside from being an examiner at the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, Pang is currently a Fellow of the Chartered Society of Designers, Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Design and Art Direction Association and the Hong Kong Designers Association Full Member.

How would you describe your personal interior design style?

To me, design style should not be defined merely by category, such as contemporary, futuristic, modern , etc. I am the kind of designer who is constantly thinking about the ever-changing possibilities in modern design which I think is more fascinating.

Where does your design inspiration come from?

Music and films always inspire and enhance my creativity. I am very interested in the sensuous effects created by the composition of visuals, sound effects and lighting of environments. Recently I have been inspired by Chinese contemporary arts. As a mirror reflecting daily life, art presents us with a unique view into both what is real and also imagined. This inspired me to rethink the correlation between our society and design and I began to explore options of how we can unleash new possibilities in design.

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?

Nowadays, it seems that every object is created with design elements as an integral part of the design. When design becomes too competitive, I think a great designer’s role is to strive to go beyond ordinary to extraordinary.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2017 and beyond.

The insights drawn from traditional Chinese’s philosophy – The Five Elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water are still very relevant and applicable to design themes today.

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to interior design schemes, what would it be?

Unleash your imagination and maximise creativity on every project.

How important are The International Design and Architecture Awards as recognition of talent and achievement?

The awards are a significant motivation for pushing us to be more creative beyond design.

What projects are you currently working on?

Private villas and designer hotel…, etc.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?

To find a new breakthrough direction in design, to be unconventional and to bring an extraordinary experience into each of our projects.
