Located in its own stand-alone construction – a glass-covered “jewel” that somewhat resembles an ocean-going liner and comes complete with its own jetty – the boutique, or “maison” was designed by Kar-Hwa Ho, Louis Vuitton’s architectural design director of the Asia-Pacific region.

The interior of the building was modelled on a luxury boat with teak floors, details like ropes and portholes, decorated in shades brown, white and blue. This is the first “maison” which means house in French – in Southeast Asia and there are only 12 such stores around the world; it took a year to finish.

At a press conference packed with international journalists, Yves Carcelle, the chairman and CEO of Louis Vuitton Malletier, welcomed the press – and eventually special “friend to the brand”, Hong Kong star Chow Yun Fat – to the new store.

Singapore’s LV maison will carry 41,000 square feet of items including men’s and women’s accessories, ready-to-wear collections, shoes and watches. And for the first time Singapore shoppers will be able to order the iconic, custom built items like the brand’s travel trunks.

Although the tops two floors of the Louis Vuitton pavilion are surrounded by glass, there are protective screens to ensure shoppers and LV’s specialised leather goods are not affected by sunlight.

The Louis Vuitton Island Maison is located at Marina Bay Sands, on the waterfront.
