China’s Master Paper Cut Artist

Paper cutting art is a Chinese art form that originated in the 4th century, but fast forward through the centuries and one women is still making headlines.

Meet Zhou Shuying, who is recognised by UNESCO as a master in her art. She’s the third generator of Yuxian paper cutting, which is unique for its vibrant colours. Inspired by nature, Zhou Shuying has created 12 original dye colours for paper cutting and her most famous piece of work was featured in a New Year Spring Festival tv gala performance.

She followed her father’s footsteps into the craft but he set down some pretty strict rules before he would passed on the knowledge he’d amassed over his career. Crucially, she had to be dedicated to the art and to him that meant not getting married until she’d mastered the craft. It was a bitter sweet promise for her.
