KREOD Pavilion Wins the Structural Awards 2013 

KREOD, the award winning innovation in architectural sculpture has won the Structural Awards 2013 for Small Projects under £2m.

The Structural Awards is the industry’s most prestigious awards ceremony, celebrating international excellence in structural engineering. This year, The Daily Telegraph joined as a Partner for the world-famous accolades.

KREOD, revealed in London’s Docklands in September 2012, has emerged as one of London 2012-13’s most iconic architectural landmarks. Currently forming the centrepiece of Peninsula Square, KREOD stands at the core of the busy public space between the Emirates Air Line and The O2 Arena in the Greenwich Peninsula.

The brainchild of Chun Qing Li, Managing Director of Pavilion Architecture and KREOD International, KREOD is an innovative architectural sculpture, organic in form, environmentally-friendly and inspired by nature. Resembling three seeds, its three 20 square metre free-standing pods combine through a series of interlocking hexagons to create an enclosed structure that is not only magnificently intricate but secure and weatherproof. The KREOD pavilion functions beautifully both as an architectural landmark and an imaginative exhibition space – its three pods can be combined in a variety of configurations or installed as free-standing forms.

Using state-of-the-art parametric design tools and digital fabrication, KREOD showcases some of the most talented designers, engineers and innovative materials to challenge current thinking and promote sustainable and forward-thinking building methods, its most notable component of which is Kebony wood.

KREOD is constructed of Kebony wood, an award-winning sustainable alternative to tropical hardwood and preservative treated wood. The wooden structure of KREOD is durable, resistant, sustainable, environmentally-friendly, easily-maintained and beautiful in aesthetic.

The judges of the Structural awards commented on KREOD Pavilion: “Once in a while, someone develops new techniques and processes, couples them with imaginative and perceptive engineering skills, and allows the realisation of a design that previously would not have been feasible or financially viable. Though temporary by nature, the KREOD Pavilion is a seminal structure, demonstrating the possibilities of the exo-skeletal approach to permanent habitable buildings of the future.”
