Dating resolutions for the Year of the Snake

A few weeks ago we said goodbye to the Year of the Dragon and welcomed in the Year of the Snake. With every new year comes an opportunity to commit to living a happy, healthy and prosperous life, and to finding whatever your heart desires most – whether that’s a new job, a new relationship, or just the freedom to do what you want.

For those who want to make the Year of the Snake a great year romantically, we’ve come up with some resolutions to help you find – and keep – that special someone.

I will be good to myself

The most important relationship you can have is the one you have with yourself. When you love and honour yourself just as you are, you allow others to do the same.

I will not go out with people I know are bad for me

We’ve all had relationships with people who’ve been wrong for us, whether it’s dating a ‘bad boy’ in college or continuing to see that girl who skips town every few weeks and doesn’t return phone calls. This year, resolve to say “no” to anyone who’s going to cause more drama than happiness – it’s just not worth it.

I will go with my gut feeling

Your instinct will always be your best guide when it comes to dating and relationships. If you’re three dates into a new relationship and your gut tells you you’re not really into it, listen. Better to be honest with yourself (and your date) now than cause heartache further down the line when you knew all along it probably wouldn’t work.

I will not bow to the expectations of others

It’s often challenging to tune out the voices of other people who have opinions about who you should date and marry. For those of us who come from strict immigrant families, there’s always the expectation or pressure that we’ll marry a certain kind of person, from a certain kind of family. But the reality is often very different.

Ultimately, you’ll never find happiness trying to please others. Whether it’s meeting new people online at or just dating outside of your comfort zone, concentrate on making this the year you date someone wonderful – not someone who just looks good on paper.

I will be open to new experiences

Don’t let past failures or heartbreaks dictate the next direction of your dating life. Say “yes” to things that may once have been an instant no-go, like accepting an invite to a party where you don’t know anyone, or trying one of the many Chinese dating agencies now available to singles in the UK.
