Nee Hao Magazine proudly supported COCOA (www.cocoa.org.uk), an organisation which helps Chinese orphaned and abandoned children. At our Chinese New Year Event held on February 9, we donated the proceeds from our charity raffle to COCOA. 

A message from COCOA:

“Every year, around 30 million babies are born in China.

As a result of China’s ‘one child’ policy and its traditional preference for boys – hundreds of thousands of girls and disabled children are abandoned each year.

Many abandoned infants die from exposure. Others are picked up by gangs and used for begging. The lucky ones go to Chinese orphanages.

Under-funded and under-staffed, the level of care in many of these orphanages is barely adequate.

Through your help, COCOA can improve the conditions for babies and children in many of China’s orphanages, by enhancing their quality of care and providing much needed equipment, medicine and trained staff.

Grants from COCOA have been used to:

• sponsor babies and children in long-term care and children awaiting adoption

• pay for treatment of remediable conditions such club feet, cleft lip and palate, hole in the heart.

• kit out baby rooms and buy necessities such as cots and bedding

• fit out a special therapy room for children with disabilities

• replace the roof of an orphanage destroyed in an earthquake

• train staff

• buy essential winter clothing

• buy specialist equipment such as strollers, physiotherapy tables and custom-made wheelchairs

• fit out and run medical clinics within orphanages

• pay for formula milk for abandoned babies

• provide play and learning equipment.”
